Aquatic Centre

The River City Swimming Club is privileged to be able to call the Murray Evans Sports and Aquatic Centre home.

DionThe complex is based at Somerville House School on Stephens Road, South Brisbane and, while it was built as a school facility, it is open to the general public.

The complex is regularly in demand from a wide-ranging cross section of the community. Apart from the school community and club members the complex enjoys patronage from a diverse range of lap swimmers such as members of the local community, Mater Hospital employees and the medical profession, members of the Judiciary and legal profession, and business leaders all seeking a common goal – the maintenance of personal fitness and health through use of excellent facilities at a reasonable price.

DionThe complex is regularly used for QGSSSA activities and major sporting events such as The Australian Karate Championships, Water Polo, and major swimming events are held throughout the year at the complex. The pool is also regularly used by two adjoining High Schools in St. Laurence’s Boys College and Brisbane State High School. Local primary schools also use the venue.

The indoor complex, with seating for 400 people, is regularly used by the Queensland Netball Teams as a training venue, Netball Australia, the Qld Volleyball Association, Australian Karate Federation, Australian Karate Academy, Spring Hill Gymnastics and coaches and athletes involved in elite athlete programs at the Queensland Academy of Sport.

DionThe Somerville House Aquatic centre is the only long course 50 metre by 1.8 metre deep pool in the City area available during the winter period. A significant number of lap swimmers use the pool because of this feature. The pool, with covered seating for 500 people, is also capable of being used as two 25metre pools by use of the movable bulkhead. Situated under the complex is undercover secured parking facilities for 120 vehicles.

Current regular users of our pool include The River City Rapids Swimming Club and River City Masters Club. These clubs are coached by Dion Walmsley and Luke Stafford respectively. We also have a number of Triathlon squads based at the complex, including South Bank Tri Club, Vision Tri Club and Brad Bevan Triathalon Croc Squad.

DionThere is a fully equipped Fitness Centre with state of the art Ergo Rowing and Cycling machines, free weights and a weights station. We also have a Fitness Centre set up specifically for CrossFit, which includes the full range of equipment (such as speed ball, heavy bag etc). There are two underwater viewing windows – one for side viewing and one for front on viewing, which allow the coaching staff to view swimmers from these unique angles. They also allow the coaches to video the swimmers and show them their strokes on the TV with Freeze frame video which we also have.
